WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Mahjong developed in China during the 19th century and spread through different regions and communities. As the game traveled, different styles, rules, scoring systems and traditions developed along the way. While the way it’s played may vary, the heart of the game has always been about bringing people together.

MORE THAN A GAME
In Hong Kong, mahjong became deeply woven into family and social life. It’s played at gatherings, holidays and around family tables, often passed from one generation to the next. For us, those memories are personal. We grew up seeing mahjong as part of family, culture and connection. That same tradition is what we’re carrying forward through 888 Mahjong Social.
WHY HONG KONG STYLE?
Mahjong has many regional styles, each with its own rules, scoring and traditions. Hong Kong style is the version passed down through our families and the style at the heart of 888 Mahjong Social. It’s the game we grew up around and the tradition we want to preserve, share and pass on. FAN is used to determine the value of a winning hand, adding another layer of strategy as you build and score your hand.

THE 888 WAY
Hong Kong style rules and FAN scoring can vary from table to table. Our 888 Mahjong Social House Rules and FAN Point System provide one consistent way to learn and play, whether you’re at an 888 Mahjong Social event or around your own table.
NEVER PLAYED? COME ANYWAY.
Our instructors help beginners understand the tiles, build a hand, learn Seong, Pung and Kong, calculate FAN and work toward that first Sik Wu.
